The Planet Around ME!

By Mannat Malhotra

Sometimes I feel whether it is a blessing or a disguise to be a resident in a populated city like New Delhi. Delhi is rich in heritage and there are various historical monuments like Red Fort, Purana Qila, Humayun tomb, Lotus Temple etc. which attract tourists from all over the world. On the flip side is humungous population in this city. I read online that the population of Delhi is approximately 33.8 million. The population pressure can be seen everywhere. There is huge rush in public transport like metro and buses and private vehicle have also mushroomed manifold leading to traffic jams. The population has also brought a heavy toll on the resources which is evident from the growing size of and landfill sites near Gazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa a nd growing filth and litter in public spots. In monsoon season the drainage system of the city usually succumbs as there is water logging an traffic jam everywhere.

The children from my generation are worried about noise pollution, water pollution, air pollution (with such highPPM levels) and adulteration in food and medicines. Both abiotic (i.e. The world of non-living elements) and biotic (world of living organisms e.g. plants and animals) have suffered badly from pollution. The biggest problem in the modern civilization is pollution. The environment is polluted due to various reasons such as global warming cutting down of trees, noise pollution, water pollution. The water bodies are polluted due to many reasons such as industrial wastes, drains etc. The soil is getting polluted due to excessive use of pesticides. the noise pollution is caused due to unnecessary honking.

I am not sure how to get rid of all this menaces around us, but after searching on internet I have reduced list of some measures which may help in reducing pollution and keeping the planet clean and green:

SOME WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN SAVE OUR PLANET EARTH

Stop wasting water

Plantation of trees

Say no to plastic

Saving leftover  food

Shop organic products

Turn of lights at home and shops when not in use

Make birdhouse

Reduce usage of paper

Don’t litter and Keep our surroundings clean

Reduce the usage of carbon

Reuse and recycle

Replenish ground water levels by rain water harvesting

HOW TO REDUCE POLLUTION

Reduce trips in personal car, use public transport, promoting electric vehicle and car or do carpool.

Reduce the usage of wooden stove usage

Avoid burning leaves, trash and other materials

Avoid gas powered garden equipment’s

I see many people gifting swanky gifts to their children. They give them good house, costly cars, best education but no one is bothered to gift a good environment also. Actually, we don’t need that as gift also. It’s our fundamental right to life! The current generation needs to understand the importance of sustainable development. The true gift which one can give to progeny is not money or materialistic things, its pure air, water, food, and surroundings.

A humble initiative to wake up the wake and serve mother nature!

I was initially thrilled as well as timid with the idea of teaching these children. Some of them are in higher classes (10th) and I am only studying in seventh. My parents motivated me and guided me to trust my abilities. I am taking their regular sessions. I am amazed by the results. The children are enthusiastic about learning French and I am astonished by their pace of learning. I felt butterflies in my stomach when i saw the videos made by Shikshyaly for me.

My Holidays in Europe by Mannat Malhotra

Everyone in Europe makes an earnest effort to keep their city clean. No one honks unnecessarily or there is honking in the rarest cases only. In India, we have to make a long journey in this direction.
