Elections are the sign of a democracy through which people can express their opinions and choose a political party to govern the country
Today 25th May, 2024 is the Lok Sabha (Parliament) election day and my parents are ready and charged up to cast their vote. Suddenly political discussion started in our family analysing the credentials of the party and candidate who is contesting in our constituency. I am so overjoyed to see the diversity of opinions in my family and the respect they have for each other.
Before going to the polling station we went to a help desk which guided my parents about the pooling booth where they had to cast their vote. There is so heavy security near the polling station. Everything is going smoothly. People of all ages are waiting in queue for their turn. India is so passionate for this festival of democracy!
India follows a system of universal adult franchise. Any male or female who is above 18 years of age and has Indian citizenship can cast a vote. I read in my school course curriculum that initially women were not given the right to vote in the United States of America. Only in the year 1920, women got the right to vote.
In India recently Women Reservation Bill has been passed by the parliament. It provisions to reserve one-third of seats for women in parliament and state legislatures. I am confident that it will strengthen the cause of women rights and equality in the society.
No doubt, its a long struggle seeking recognition and upliftment of the women rights. But still, we have miles to go! I feel inspired to see so many women candidates contesting the parliamentary elections. I am confident that when they will be elected and represent in parliament, they will further strengthen the laws relating to women and children rights.
I feel lucky to be part of the greatest and biggest democracy. Elections are like a festival in India. My parents being dutiful citizens have cast their votes.
I wish good luck to all parties and may the democracy win!
